stoked for my crew at doubleday & cartwright for this one (alongside a talented cast of co-creators including the dudes over at part & parcel). killed it.

experimental typography at the cooper union

this semester at the cooper union, thanks to mike essl (and with plenty of insight from sasha at the lubalin center as well) i have been teaching an experimental typography elective course (major shoutout to coursekit as well, since im linking out to everyone here).

my students have been doing a great job with the 2nd to last project dealing with building an experimental typeface based on concepts that were self determined. below are iphone snapshots which do not do them justice, but needless to say i am very happy with the work done thus far.

sooyeon kim is making a type based on exploring a grid that accommodates both korean and english letterforms.

ariel cotton is building type based on circuit boards – shown here is the boards separated from the circuit layer which is proving to be a pretty interesting form in and of itself.

dennis gilstead is building type without, well, really building type. these blob forms created shapes around letters which were then extruded to show the forms created within.

kyle richardson is building type based on forms found in the human body. she has multiple widths that build organic proportions that fit into 3 categories hence multiple widths you see above. the serifs add another human dimension to the concept.

michael grey started off with a  concept of building type that combines forms found in helvetica as well as didot. from there he has found a idea that is proving more difficult but also more personally interesting and less of a strict formal reaction. the S is proving to be the breakthrough letter that will inform the next round of iterations.

excited for the further evolution in coming weeks.

pitch—a new typeface from klim

a new obsession. need to buy it soon.

not sure there is much left to say about the skill kris sowersby has with elegantly and smartly crafting beautiful type for ham-fisted designers such as myself to jam into our layouts. i have used his type for some years now (starting with his typeface national while i was with mass appeal magazine and most recently at the fader, where i used tiempos body/headline as well as founders grotesk) and can vouch not only for obvious formal beauty of his type, but also for the care he puts into making sure that his type will fall as smartly into place as possible—which is why we are all just going to have to exact some patience in waiting for his type to be available for the web.

speaking of the web, go browse around kris’s brand new and almost frustratingly beautiful website here.
